As I said in my previous post, I am very pleased with my iPhone 3g purchase. It’s not perfect, but I knew the pros and cons going in. Overall the experience is what I expected it to be. However, there is one major flaw in the phone that I did not anticipate. The native calendar application is completely incapable of synchronizing with Google Calendar.

It might be surprising, but despite my high level of connectivity, I don’t do so well with the social web applications. I started with Orkut back in the day. We got all of our friends onto it, then we got tired of it after a few weeks. I have a Facebook account, but I don’t actually use it for anything. I primarily just use e-mail, IM and web forums for communication with the new world, and the telephone to communicate with the old world. Twitter is the first thing to put a kink in the works in quite some time.

I use Linode for web hosting. I like it because from an administration perspective, I effectively have a dedicated Linux box. In reality it is shared, so I pay a lot less than the cost of dedicated with the same amount of freedom. Up until Saturday, this server was running a very old Gentoo build that I never bothered to update. Performing this update was good, but had unforeseen consequences. I wrote an article about how Linux’s lack of complete support for most hardware is a bigger problem now than its total lack of support for a relatively smaller amount of hardware. This article really felt like Digg material when I wrote it. I was saying something that had not really been said in the past, and I spent a lot of time writing it. I decided to go against the stigma of Digging your own content, and I put it up there. I would not be writing this article if I didn’t make the front page. If you read the post prior to this one, you would have gotten the idea that I was going to make a lot of blog posts very soon. This is exactly what I planned.
